Growing up, I often remember my mom and grandma telling me to “sit up straight,” “walk with a confident posture!” and I remember wondering to myself why they always got on me about my posture. Well now I really appreciate their effort! While many of us focus on healthy eating, cardio and weight training, we often forget about how important our posture is. In order to properly perform exercises we need to use good posture.
So what is “good posture”?!
Pilates instructors focus heavily on good posture. In each exercise they help you become aware of how your body moves through space. Pilates teaches you to engage your core muscles, draw your shoulder blades together and away from your ears and lengthen through your spine. After your workout you feel long and lean.
By focusing on your posture during your pilates workout you will begin to notice how you feel during your everyday activities. What triggers you to round through the back, raise your shoulders up to your ears, shift your hips from one side to the other.
Strengthening the trapezius muscles in your back will help to keep the shoulders in proper alignment, keeping an engaged core will help to lengthen your spine and being flexible in your hips and legs will allow you to sit and stand tall.
It’s amazing what you will find out about your own body after having your posture assessed. STOTT Pilates instructors are trained to look and your alignment and provide an analysis for you.
